Summer Workouts: Why they should NOT be different

The following is taken from my weekly newsletter that you can subscribe to by clicking HERE

If Sunday is anything to go by, the Summer Beach weather is on the way…

Ok, that’s incredibly optimistic.

But with the summer arriving, it’s when the workouts completely change. The weights are thrown out the window for cardio/HIIT sessions to get lean for the beach or the upcoming summer holidays.

Time for more miles on the road. Sweat the fat off you!

Because if you’re not sweating, you’re not trying…

Except, that’s not how it REALLY works.

And we are ALL guilty of it. Increase the cardio in the summer months to lose more weight and get leaner.

But let’s say you do add one extra cardio session to your routine. Maybe it equates to 300-400kcals.

Maybe you feel more hungry after it, or it’s a tough session, and you need more food as fuel to recover.

Pretty much balances out.

”But Seán, if I don’t need that 300-400kcals of food before or after the session, then I’m in a 300kcal deficit, and it helps, right?”

Yes, but what’s the real common denominator?

Calorie intake.

Even increasing your sessions: Are you going from 3 to 4 sessions a week to 5 or 6 sessions a week to try to maintain a calorie deficit without increasing food and increasing the risk of injury?

When all you really need to do is eat slightly less to get into a calorie deficit and keep your training regime up.

Besides, what’s really going to give you that leaner look?

That’s resistance training. It involves getting stronger, leaner, and more active. It also helps increase your metabolic rate, so you burn more calories at rest throughout the day.

But will you get bigger and more bulky?

Well, if it was that easy, I’d look like The Rock. Tattoos and all!

But that comes down to nutrition. He eats an insane amount of food to look that size, just look at his cheat meals.

So let’s change how you look at ‘summer’ training.

Leaner, more toned: resistance training, using weights or challenging bodyweight exercises

Healthier heart, mood and decreasing health risks: cardio exercises

Losing body fat: nutrition

Losing body fat is simple but not easy. It comes down to nutrition and consuming fewer calories. However, you still need to fuel your body for daily activities. It’s a balance.

Your workouts should include both resistance training and cardio to maximize their benefits and work towards your specific fitness goals.

And if you’re unsure how to do that, allow me to take the guesswork out of your training today so that all you have to concentrate on is getting your routine down and showing up.

ANY GIVEN RUNDAY PODCAST

This week on the Any Given Runday Podcast, we welcome Jennifer Fay, Coach and Founder of Sheriff Street Running Club.

We have already received phenomenal feedback for this week’s episode, which is very inspiring for some who want to start their running journey this summer.

Jennifer talks about how a 5km fundraising event for her daughter led to her running large-scale fundraising events as well as her own running journey taking off. Having previously never understood why people ran, Jennifer went from walking a 5km event to running a 50km event, hiring a coach (previous Any Given Runday guest @ian_is_running_1). She also talks about how and why she formed her own running club, Sheriff Street Running Club, and the impact it has had on the community.
