Finally getting my BSc in Strength and Conditioning

fter 3 years of study, I graduated in 2009 with a diploma in Personal Training (as well as Holistic and Sports Massage)

“I am done with college and studying”, I proclaimed after it - definitely a top 5 lie in my life.

A year later, already fed up with the fitness instructor/cleaner/receptionist industry, I enrolled in Electronic Engineering in Maynooth.

During those years, I found my way back to the fitness industry (thanks to the Boot Camp I still do in Castleknock) while getting my 4-year college degree in 2… my story, and I’m sticking to it 😜

Still struggling to find my way in the fitness industry, knowing that I needed to expand my knowledge, I enrolled in a BSc in Strength and Conditioning through @setantacollege in 2016.

I loved the course, but 2 years in, having achieved a Higher Cert in S&C, I had to pause my studying. Moving to Dublin and the ups and downs of being out working on my own meant that, no matter how valuable the course was, I couldn’t afford it at the time.

A few years of struggle went by before I eventually applied for a job at ABC Gym. I had followed them for a while and knew I could it was the place to progress. But I also knew that many of their coaches came from Setanta College. Despite my 9 years of experience at this point, I thought that not having a degree might go against me. I applied anyway.

During the interview process, knowing there was stiff competition for a job, I came up with different ways to stand out. Along with the social media skills from working for myself, I blurted out that I was going to go back and finish my degree - well, fuck, that was news to me!

A few weeks later, I thankfully got the job, coinciding with moving to a farm that weekend. I guess I was going back to college! What more could change?

5 weeks later: Covid. Lockdowns began

The assignments, study etc over the past 3 years, nearly, on top of everything else has been challenging.

So it was nice to get the email this morning to say I finally got a BSc.

So a lovely steak meal with 🥃 tonight to acknowledge it… and then it’s right back to work in the morning to build on it
