On my bike: Setting my main fitness goal for 2023

Ok, this pic has the new year, new hobby and new me written all over it, but this year the bike and myself are going to become best friends.

I’ve maybe taken it out once or twice since the Ring Of Kerry 180k last July. And while I plan on doing that again this year, that does not factor into why right now.

With the goals written down last night for 2023, I’m starting to feel the pressure. The plan has been set for a long time: 100 miles running in 24 hours. And it will be attempted in May.

But looking back on my mileage throughout 2022, while good in patches, I don’t know if it’s enough mileage for the challenge ahead. And with the workload increasing, it’s going to be harder and harder to find those hours.

So rather than make excuses, the bike will come into play more as additional training for aerobic capacity and building up the legs for the pounding they will take.

It will also help reduce the constant impact that road running can bring.

But it won’t replace the running. The mileage still needs to go up. And the countdown is on.

The fitness goal of the year: May 13th 2023 - hit 100 miles in 24 hours. I have no idea if my body will ever come close to this. The furthest I’ve done is 80k in under 11 and a half hours. But that fear of crashing and burning on this challenge makes it all the more fun!
