Check your ego before you judge others in the Gym

squats squat depth perfect form best type of

Which one of these squats is the best?

A: The Half Squat with Barbell
B: Goblet Squat
C: Barbell Full Squat

If you said 100% ‘C’ because it’s a full squat, “proper” squat, “advanced” or “ass to grass” then Hi, we need to talk!

For some of you, January is an awful time to be in the gym. It’s packed. Full of beginners that are unsure of what to do and instructors are booked out so they’re waiting around until they can get a programme to start. Maybe they are committing cardinal sins like curling in the squat rack. But there was a time when you were starting out too so don’t be that guy. They’ve every right to be there as you do.

Speaking of not being that guy, back to my squats. “C” is the wrong answer. But so is “A” and “B”. People are going to squat differently based on their movement, injury history and goals. If they have a good trainer, there’s probably a reason they are doing a specific type of squat. Your way of squatting might be the best way for you, but not everyone else. There is a place in the programme for all 3 types of squats.

We’re all in the gym for similar reasons. To get better. It’s going to be more packed but be encouraging not pissing and moaning about the way it was last month.

And if you are a beginner reading this, worried about being judged, this is directed a minority only. I’ve always found that the ones that truly knew what they were doing, were the quiet ones that just got on with it.

We all have to start somewhere. And a lot of us started in January too. Be helpful if asked. But leave your judging and ego at the door
