New Years Resolutions: Where it goes wrong for people

It's the New Year. Motivation is high! You're ready to crush your New Years Goals! So you decide running is going to be your thing. You get the running shoes on and hit the road like a bat out of hell (ok, there's definitely better analogies I could have used there, but it's the first one that popped into my head!)

You're off to a flying start. The music is pumping in your headphones, making you want to go even faster. Nothing can stop you.

Then, your heart starts pounding. With each step, it's getting harder and harder to breath. There's now an unmerciful pain in your side. You're slowing down. Before you know it, your hands are on your knees and you feel like throwing up.

You walk back to the house, head down.

Sound familiar?

This happens every year to a lot of people. And they are defeated before they even started.

My advice? Slow down! You're not going to achieve everything you want to achieve in January!

You have to 'embrace the suck', as I talked about on an Any Given Training Day Instagram post yesterday at my attempt at cycling.

Regardless of what activity it is, slow down. Ease yourself into it (it will actually have more endurance benefits if you apply this advice to running!)

You're in it for the long gain. Whether that's fitness goals or even nutrition. Ease into the challenge and you're more than likely to stick it out and see true change!

If you're a woman in the Castleknock area, that is the approach we will be taking to our classes that start back this Monday, January 3rd! I talked about how we try to make our ladies only Boot Camp different and more suitable to work at your pace and goals HERE along with details on how to sign up and reserve your spot HERE.

If you are not in the Castleknock area, I have a kick starter online programme HERE or you can go to one of the coaches at Any Given Training Day HERE if you have a specific running challenge (full disclosure, I will be hiring Rachael as my running coach for the first 6 weeks of the year for my 5k goals).

And if online is not your thing, I can't recommend ABC Gym enough. Based in Lucan, Clane (where you will have to deal with me) and Trim, their semi-private personal training approach is perfect for those who want to take the next step in their gym training today as well as train in a welcoming and motivating environment!

Regardless of where you are training in 2022, remember to take it slow. Especially if you haven't trained much in the past few weeks! Build healthy habits and consistency in your training that will lead towards long term results.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
